All gifts to Sarah Lawrence College are significant—to the students, faculty, staff, and to the future of the Sarah Lawrence experience.
Gifts have even more impact when donors are associated with a company that offers a matching gift benefit, which can double or triple your gift to the College.

Gifts of Securities & Wire Transfer Instructions
Did you know making a gift of appreciated securities is one of the easiest ways to increase your support for Sarah Lawrence and make a tax-smart contribution. By donating stock that has appreciated for more than a year, you are able to give up to 20 percent more by avoiding capital gains than if you sold the stock and then made a cash donation. For securities held longer than one year, you can deduct their full fair market value, regardless of what you originally paid for them. You also avoid paying capital gains tax.
Cash Gift | Stock Gift | |
---|---|---|
Current fair market value of the stock | $10,000 | $10,000 |
Income taxes saved | $3,700 | $3,700 |
Capital gains taxes saved* | $0 | $1,904 |
Tax savings | $3,700 | $5,604 |
*Assumes 20% capital gains tax and 3.8% surtax on net invested income.
Please consult with your tax advisor before making any financial decisions. Nothing in this communication is intended to constitute legal or tax advice.
Sarah Lawrence will benefit from the full value of your gift and you will not be liable for any capital gains or investment income tax on the investment’s gain. For detailed instructions concerning securities transfers and gifts of stock, please contact Isabelle Gonzalez at 914.813.9293 or igonzalez@sarahlawrence.edu.
Gifts from your IRA
Assets in a traditional individual retirement account (IRA) can make a wonderful gift to Sarah Lawrence College.
The Charitable IRA Rollover is now permanent. If you or your spouse are age 70½ or older and must take distributions from your IRA, you are permitted to distribute up to $100,000 annually directly from your IRA to charity, without incurring income tax liability on the distribution. This distribution will count toward your required minimum.
Please note that not every financial institution identifies the donor on the IRA Rollover check. E-mail Gary Carskaddan, Senior Director of Philanthropy and Planned Gifts to let us know to expect your gift, so we can thank you promptly.
Donors between ages 59 ½ and 70 ½ are permitted to take distributions from their traditional retirement plans with no early-withdrawal penalty. These funds can be used as a gift to Sarah Lawrence either outright or as a life income gift. The income tax liability you incur on this IRA withdrawal is partially offset by the charitable income tax deduction you will earn by making your gift. Please consult your tax advisor to make sure this type of gift works with your financial situation.

Gift Matching
Request a Matching Gift
Many employers sponsor matching gift programs that will double or triple charitable contributions made by their employees, retirees, and/or family members.
Companies have various methods by which you can request a matching gift; contact your company's human resources officer to learn if the company participates and what donation options are available.

Student Philanthropy/Senior Class Gift
Join the Student Philanthropy Committee
The Student Philanthropy Committee is a group of students of all class years who serve as student philanthropy ambassadors for The Fund for Sarah Lawrence. The goals of the committee are to foster a culture of philanthropy and a spirit of giving on campus, to educate the student body on the impact of philanthropy on the student experience, and to solicit support for The Fund for Sarah Lawrence's Student Scholarship Fund. The committee accomplishes these goals through fun events, peer-to-peer outreach, and collaboration with the Office of Advancement.
Support the Senior Gift Campaign
The Senior Class Gift is collective donation from members of the senior class which goes to support The Fund for Sarah Lawrence Student Scholarship Fund. The Senior Class Gift Committee is a subset of the Student Philanthropy Committee led by the Senior Class Gift Campaign Chairperson and is devoted to soliciting contributions to the Senior Class Gift Campaign. Often leaders in the College community have provided matching challenges to the senior class gift campaign to incentivize giving and increase the impact of each student gift.

How Parents & Families Can Provide Support
All members of the community are invited to participate; seniors and their families are especially asked to support the Senior Gift efforts. Parents and families can honor the accomplishments of a graduating senior and show gratitude for the graduate’s faculty and dons through a donation to the Senior Gift.
