Sarah Lawrence College Celebrates 94th Commencement

Degrees were conferred upon more than 320 undergraduates and more than 100 graduate students under a tent on Westlands Lawn. Alumni from the classes of 2021 and 2020 were invited to return to campus to finally take that meaningful walk across Westlands Terrace—a high point of every graduation.

Art History Faculty Member Joseph C. Forte Retires After 44 Years at Sarah Lawrence

After 44 years as a member of the Art History faculty at Sarah Lawrence, the dominant emotion Joe Forte feels is gratitude. He reflects, “Sarah Lawrence made me. I’ve evolved over my time here, and it has made me a better person. Sarah Lawrence made me aware of how I could make a difference in the world, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have done that.”

History Faculty Member Priscilla Murolo ’80 Retires After 34 Years at Sarah Lawrence

Priscilla Murolo ’80 has had a kaleidoscopic understanding of what it is to be a member of the Sarah Lawrence College community. She is a 1980 graduate of the College; she has been a member of the history faculty since 1988, specializing in labor history; she helmed the Graduate Program in Women’s History for nearly two decades; and she is the proud parent of two Sarah Lawrence College graduates.

Making it Personal: Kathy Yeu P'15 Partners with Career Services to Set Students on a Path to Professional Success

Kathy Yeu P’15, a professional coach and personal branding expert, typically works with top executives and creatives to help them define themselves and their products. Recently she also has been helping her daughter, Michelle Nigro ’15, and her friends navigate the tricky straits of their nascent careers, and as a Sarah Lawrence College parent and donor, it occurred to her that there likely were SLC students who could also benefit from her skills.

Strength to Grow

Academic excellence, concern for the community, and the expansion of educational opportunity are all part and parcel of the mission of Sarah Lawrence College, and growing sustainably is integral to advancing those values and aspirations. To do this, the College is expanding its offerings by capitalizing on existing strengths and forging collaborations between graduate and undergraduate programs. These collaborations are poised to open up new vistas for current students and to provide attractive options for new applicants considering the College.

Building Bridges

In an innovative move that will admit talented students from regional community colleges to Sarah Lawrence, the College has established the Sarah Lawrence Bridges program. The program, which includes partnerships with Westchester Community College and Bronx Community College, guarantees full funding of tuition and fees for two students from each community college to earn a bachelor’s degree at SLC. The first four transfer students began their studies at the College last fall.

Center for the Urban River at Beczak Awarded $40,000 Grant from New York State

Looking Back as we Move Ahead

Life on the Sarah Lawrence campus in fall 2020 was unlike anything in the College’s history: nearly all classes convened online, students were asked to socialize in pods, on-campus events required capacity limitations, and face masks provided a new way to make a fashion statement. And of course, regular nasal swabs to test for COVID-19 are hard-to-forget hallmarks of the semester.

Sarah Lawrence Mourns Loss of Joan H. Marks '51, Pioneer of Genetic Counseling

The Sarah Lawrence College community mourns the death of Joan H. Marks ’51. In 1972, Joan took the helm of what, at the time, was a three-year-old genetic counseling graduate program at Sarah Lawrence—the first in the nation. During her 26 year tenure, she would grow the program to the largest in the nation and blaze the trail for an entirely new field in healthcare, blending the tenets of psychology, advocacy, biology, and medicine in a manner that truly embodied Sarah Lawrence's philosophy of education.

Socially Distant, Intellectually Close

This summer, cognizant of the transformative power of education and the institution’s potential for being a stabilizing force in a seemingly unstable world, Sarah Lawrence launched a new initiative with the dual aims of fostering incoming students’ sense of community and enabling them to get a head start on their SLC education. Melissa Frazier, associate dean of the College, leveraged Sarah Lawrence’s remarkable intellectual resources and nimbleness to organize a five-week mini-semester for incoming first-year students. From July 6 to August 7, incoming students had the opportunity to take one or two special courses—remotely, for academic credit, and at no additional cost—taught by SLC’s outstanding faculty.
